Empowering Referees Through Health and Skills Training
REFIT is an Erasmus+ Small-scale Partnership in Vocational Education and Training (KA210-VET) designed to strengthen the health, professional competence and long-term career sustainability of football referees. Implemented from September 2025 to February 2027, the project brings together complementary expertise from Bulgaria and Türkiye in referee education, vocational training, rehabilitation, community engagement and digital learning.
Football referees work in physically demanding and psychologically challenging environments. They must maintain high levels of fitness, concentration and decision-making accuracy while managing match pressure, conflict, irregular schedules and the risk of injury or burnout. Despite these demands, referees — particularly those working at amateur and semi-professional levels — do not always have equal access to structured training in physical conditioning, injury prevention, mental well-being, communication and digital performance monitoring.
REFIT responds to these needs by developing an accessible, competency-based training pathway tailored to aspiring, amateur, semi-professional and professional referees, as well as referee trainers, mentors, sports organisations and vocational education providers.
What REFIT Aims to Achieve
The project aims to improve referees’ knowledge, skills and competences in four interconnected areas:
- Physical conditioning and performance optimisation
- Injury prevention, recovery and long-term health
- Mental resilience, stress management and psychological well-being
- Communication, decision-making and professional skills
These areas are addressed through practical and interactive learning activities that combine theoretical knowledge with real-life match scenarios, guided exercises, case studies, self-assessment tools, video demonstrations and digitally supported learning.
